Every recording problem downstream of the microphone gets harder to fix if the level going in was wrong. A clipped take is not repairable; the waveform's peaks are simply gone, and no plugin brings back information that was never captured. A take recorded too quietly is technically salvageable, but turning it up also turns up the room's noise floor and the interface's own self-noise right along with the voice, which is exactly the kind of hiss background noise removal then has to fight against. Gain staging is the practice of setting the input level correctly once, before recording starts, so neither problem happens.

What the Gain Knob Is Actually Doing
The gain (or trim) control on an audio interface sets how much the preamp boosts the raw signal coming from the microphone before it reaches the analog to digital converter. Too little gain and the resulting digital file sits low in the available range, quiet and thin, with proportionally more of what you do capture being the interface's own self-noise rather than voice. Too much gain and the loudest peaks in a performance, a hard consonant, a sudden volume swell, exceed the maximum level the converter can represent, and those peaks get flattened into a harsh, unrecoverable digital clip.
Clipping cannot be fixed after the fact
A distorted, clipped waveform is missing data, not just distorted-sounding data. No de-clipping plugin restores information that the converter simply failed to record. If a session runs hot, the only real fix is to re-record it at a proper level.
Setting Gain Once, Correctly
- Read the loudest section of your script, or improvise a few seconds at your normal performance energy, well before you hit record for real. A quiet test read at your everyday reading voice will not reveal what happens when you actually deliver a line with energy.
- Watch the interface's own input meter, not your DAW's channel meter, while you do this; the interface meter shows the analog signal before any software gain is applied.
- Aim for peaks that sit comfortably below the interface's clip point, roughly -12dB to -6dB on most meters, leaving headroom for the loudest moment in the actual session, not just the test read.
- Re-check the level anytime you change mic distance, switch scripts with a different energy range, or start a new day's session; gain is not a set-once-forever control if your working distance or delivery style shifts.

A common workaround among newer voice actors is deliberately recording low to avoid any risk of clipping, then turning the file up in post. This trades one problem for a worse one: turning up a quiet recording turns up everything in it, including self-noise from the preamp and any room noise that was sitting under the voice the whole time, just at a level too quiet to notice before. A properly gain staged recording captures more genuine signal relative to that fixed noise floor, which is the entire reason gain staging matters more than most beginners assume, it is not really about avoiding distortion so much as it is about maximizing how much of what you record is voice rather than noise.
Make It a Thirty Second Habit
The actors who never think about gain again are the ones who built a specific, repeatable habit: same mic distance every session (a piece of tape on the desk helps), a quick loud test line before recording starts, one glance at the interface meter, done. It costs less time than a proper vocal warm up and prevents the single most common reason a otherwise good take gets thrown out during editing.
The Cheapest Insurance in the Signal Chain
Gain staging costs nothing to get right and nothing to check daily, and it is the one setting that decides, before you have said a single word, whether the rest of the chain from mic technique to noise removal to final delivery has clean material to work with or a compromised file to apologize for. Thirty seconds with a loud test line and a glance at the meter is cheaper than any plugin that claims to fix the problem afterward.
